A San Diego Fable

One day, in a zoo, an ugly duckling suddenly found herself separated from her parents and lost among the crowd. She got scared, because losing her parents would make her feel all the guilt, as perhaps she'd been a bad duckling because she did not stick by their side that's why she got lost. Still, she tried to hide her fear and tried to get a hold of herself. She got tired from looking for her parents that she decided to sit down for a while. Then suddenly a white swan sat beside her and she was awed by its magnificence. It was a father white swan, and he seemed to know that something was wrong, so he asked her if she was lost. The ugly duckling hesitated for a moment, as she yet had to assess whether she could trust the white swan and it was safe to talk about her situation. As she felt the sincerity of the father swan, she finally admitted she was lost and she started to cry and it seemed like she could'nt help tears fall down her cheeks. The kind father swan offered to help and from then on she knew that she found a best friend in him. Together, they walked and found her parents waiting for her in a nearby corner. They didn't know that she got lost, they thought she just went to see the Pandas so they were not surprised to see her be back. But the ugly duckling did not tell them what really happened, she thought it was better to stay that way as it would just might spoil a jolly mood. As they walked away, she looked back at the white father swan, he was so grand and he was like an angel to her. She looked at her parents, they have brown feathers, small body and beak compared to the swan. Though she wished she could be a swan, she knew she would never become a swan, but then again, she realized that she could always become a beautiful brown duck, with the heart of a white swan.

Maybe it is not related to your story, but .… brown ducks are beautiful too, and in their bodies are beautiful brown duck hearts.

I see hate seeing people imagine that they would be more beautiful if they were a white swan instead of a brown duck.

Dear Richard,
Indeed, brown ducks are beautiful and any specie could be beautiful. Perhaps this ugly duckling grew up in an environment not so appealing so thats why she wanted to have the heart of a white swan...
Also, in an ideal scenerio, all creatures would be equally beautiful but in reality we have canons dictated by society. It takes a lot of courage to resist the insecurities that these canons create but yes, it is not impossible to break away from it. I pray that indeed all will be beautiful.

I love the story. Things that are essential are usually invisible to the naked eyes.

I like my roasted on chicken rice lah! hahaha evil me.

I am glad to hear that. One thing I noticed in Peru is that most of the population is non-white, but all the advertisements feature white people, TV personalities are white (or whitish) people. I hate it. There are many beautiful Peruvian people, but you will never know it from the "stock photos" of Andean people or the gross caricatures masquerading as white people.

I suppose this all came to a head two years ago when my daughter and her cousin both picked a blonde girl from the children's entertainment group Hi-5 as the prettiest. I'm sorry, but the prettiest was the black girl (speaking as a completely objective guy here ;) Mind you, all the girls were pretty, but I think the black one was the prettiest. Why was this? Because at their young ages they have already been conditioned to believe that blonde is beautiful.

Please don't think of yourself as a brown duck, but rather as a beautiful person.

Hi Foyan

I guess there's a hidden agenda behind the story..(depends on each individual actually)

The story is very touchy, just have to wish the duckling all the best and strive harder..

Actually, I was like the duckling itelf..looking at someone to be 'the magnificent', but as I grew older, I find that at times its that great becoming one..hee

Anyways..take care and see u around
